    Description

    SSh-40 - a steel helmet of the 1940 model, the subject of military uniforms, was widely used in the Armed Forces of the Soviet Union during the German-Soviet war and in the postwar years, until more advanced models of SSh-60 and SSh-68 arrived.
    Made of alloy armored steel brand 36SGN 1.2 mm thick. During the war it was produced by the metallurgical plants "Red October" and "Lisven Metallurgical Plant". Acceptance tests of finished products included a selective (from the party) assessment of the armor resistance of the helmet by firing a simple bullet from a cartridge with a reduced charge, with a 7.62-mm rifle model 1891/30 [1].
    The design of SSh-40 differs from the previous model (SSh-39) in that it uses a simpler and stronger helmet. Hence their main external difference: in SSh-40 six rivets were used for fastening of a helmet, in SSh-39 - three. The helmet consists of three parts - "petals" made of artificial leather or fabric, which in the upper part of the helmet are connected by a lace designed to adjust the size. On the inside of each petal is a cushion made of cotton wool. The tarpaulin chin strap consists of two halves attached to rings on the sides of the helmet. One of the parts at the free end has a sliding buckle; the end of the other half is compressed by a semicircular metal mandrel.
    Unlike previous models of steel helmets, SSh-40 was available in only three sizes ("numbers"). The weight of the steel part of the helmet (without undercarriage) of the largest size - 800 gr.
