Description
The SSH-39 helmet was in service with the Red Army, but already in 1940 it began to be replaced by the SSH-40 model. The latest stamps SSh-39 date back to 1941. Nevertheless, the helmet was used throughout the Great Patriotic War (until about 1942).The helmet was found in 2021 in the Seim river in Ukraine, Sumy region, the village of Ozarichi.
The steel helmet SSh-39, in contrast to the SSh-36, was made of higher quality steel with additives of nickel and silicon. The metal was 1.9 mm thick. (the thickness of the SSh-36 metal was only 1.1 mm). From 1939 to 1940, petal-type liners were installed on the SSh-39. The most common were comforters made of black dermantine (several patterns are possible). However, white leather comforters are rare; even less often - from yellow oilcloth. Chin straps were also installed in different types: different materials and stitching. Since 1940, dome-type liners were installed on the SSh-39 (as on the SSh-36). The helmet was painted in khaki color. On the front, from 1939 to 1940, the contour of a five-pointed star with a sickle and a hammer in the middle was drawn; no star has been applied since 1940.
