The cap prototype in Russia was a forage cap - a uniform headdress for foragers in the Russian army, which, with a slight modification, was introduced as a uniform headdress for sailors of the Russian fleet. This cap was distinguished from the modern visor by the absence of a ribbon, dark green color and large penetration numbers of naval crews on the fringes.
In November 1811, a peakless cap was introduced in the Russian Imperial Army and Navy as an everyday headdress in all parts of the army and navy.
Since the middle of the XIX century. they began to make white edging on their visors - narrow white edging - a detail that has survived on modern visors.
The first ribbons in the Russian fleet appeared on the oilcloth hats of sailors in 1857 and no later than 1872 on caps. Until that time, only slotted letters and numbers were put on the fringes of sailor caps, which were painted over or lined with yellow cloth. In the 70s of the XIX century. a black visor with a ribbon is introduced in the Russian fleet, on which the name of the naval crew and ship was applied. The exact size, the shape of the letters on the tapes, as well as the tapes themselves, were approved for the entire rank and file of the Russian fleet on August 19, 1874. In the Soviet Navy, the font on the Red Navy tapes was approved in 1923.
A special ribbon for the visors of Soviet sailors is the ribbon of the Guards ships, approved together with the Guards badge in 1943. The Ribbon of the Guards ships has the colors of the ribbon of the Order of Glory from alternating stripes of orange and black, which corresponds to the colors of the St. George Ribbon (there is an order of 1769, which says that colors are given: orange - the color of the flame and black - the color of powder smoke).
In addition, the tape was used to hold peakless caps on the head in windy weather - the ends of the tape were tied around the neck (or the tape was clamped with teeth). The length of the tape was longer than that of modern peaks, and was about 160 cm.
In Russia and the USSR, the navy wore visors with black and white tops. Black visors are worn in the cold season, with a white top - in the summer. Since the white top is very easily soiled, they began to make it in the form of an easily removable cover (white naval caps have a similar design), which can be quickly removed and washed.

It should be noted that, for its time, a visor is a fairly progressive uniform, and for this reason, visors were introduced on many fleets (with one or another change) as a uniform headdress for sailors. However, the Second World War showed the impracticability of everyday wearing a visor (as well as a cap) - there is its mark, inconvenience of wearing and the complete absence of protective (from sunlight, etc.) functions. Therefore, in the navy, other, more adapted hats began to be introduced in stages - berets, caps, helmets, caps, and in a number of cases sailors work without hats at all. The visor remains for the most part a symbol of the Navy and is worn by sailors in the ranks, in dresses or in special occasions.
